If you’re a non-EU foreigner married to an Austrian citizen, some of the bureaucracy that comes with living in Austria is just a little bit easier than it would be otherwise – on everything from residency to buying property.

I hear that even though a non-EU spouse is married to an Austrian, the spouse requires a german certificate to get a settlement permit in Austria and yet if a non-EU spouse is married to another EU citizen, for example, an Italian, then they can move to Austria and the spouse has no language requirement. Is this true?

Great article! Just a note on non-EU citizens buying property in Tirol: I (and some others I'm aware of) were able to jointly buy property with our Austrian spouses, however permission was only granted afger fulfilling the requirements based on cultural grounds (aka having Austrian children). The process was quite straight forward and the government officials surprisingly nice and supportive! I would recommend anyone thinking about property to give it a go - it's worth the effort!
