Plans have been unveiled for a new high-speed road that will offer a fast connection between Brno in the Czech Republic and Vienna.

The construction of a two-lane road to Vienna via Mikulov, in south Moravia, will be finished by 2018, Czech Transport Minister Antonin Prachar said after talks with Lower Austria's governor Erwin Pröll on Tuesday.

The road will only have two lanes in the Czech Republic, because traffic is less busy there than in Austria, Prachar said.

In Austria the Schrick-Poysbrunn section of the road will be a motorway, with four lanes. The remaining 15 km stretch to the Czech border will be two lanes. This section will be completed between 2016 and 2017, Pröll said, adding that the chosen solution is rational with regard to the intensity of traffic between the two countries.

The aim is to divert traffic from more densely populated areas, Pröll added. Therefore the Austrian part of the road will bypass the town of Drasenhofen.

The lack of a high-speed road connecting the Czech Republic and Austria has been criticized by Czech Finance Minister Andrej Babis. "We will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the [Velvet] Revolution... it is a shame we do not have a motorway to Austria, and that a train journey to Vienna lasts four and a half hours," he said.
