Gugelhupf was traditionally the cake of the poor, but it was a breakfast favourite of Emperor Franz Joseph and gradually became an Austrian classic for afternoon tea. It’s similar to the American Bundt sponge cake and has many different variations - including marbled, poppyseed and even a mulled wine version for wintry days.
