An Austrian didn’t invent cake per se, but the famous Sacher Torte was first made in 1832 by Franz Sacher. Austria’s then minister of foreign affairs, Prince Metternich, ordered a special dessert for a dinner to be attended by high-ranking guests. His chief cook was taken ill, and the task of preparing the dessert was passed to Franz, a 16-year-old apprentice. The result was this rather magnificent chocolate cake. The exact recipe remains a closely guarded secret.
