Austria to continue using AstraZeneca - for now

Austria will continue to vaccinate using the AstraZeneca vaccine, after the country’s vaccination board recommended this action according to Der Standard newspaper, despite Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Cyprus, Slovenia and Latvia all pausing use of the vaccine.

Austria is waiting for the European Medical Agency decision expected on Tuesday, while the national vaccination committee is in favour of continuing vaccination - for the time being, according to the Wiener Zeitung newspaper.

Should Easter holidays be extended?

Austrian virologist Andreas Bergthaler is calling for Easter holidays to be extended for schools in reaction to around 500 new infections per day and increasing hospital numbers in Vienna, ORF reports. 

Thousands vaccinated in Tyrol

Around 42,500 people have been  vaccinated in the Schwaz district of Tyrol. The district received an extra 100,000 Biontech-Pfizer vaccines from the EU in response to an outbreak of the South African variant of the coronavirus.

The vaccination coverage is to be accompanied by a scientific study. As of Monday evening 185 people were infected with the corona virus n the Schwaz district.

The number of actively positive confirmed South Africa cases and suspected cases in Tyrol rose by six on Monday to 67 for the time being, ORF reports. 

Seven day incidence at 209

The seven-day incidence or the number of new infections with the coronavirus in the past seven days per 100,000 inhabitants, is 209.8 in Austria. The number is still highest in Salzburg (274.7) and Vienna (268.1). The value is lowest in Vorarlberg (68) and Tyrol (141.6).

Restaurants and bars in Vorarlberg 'well attended'

Restaurants and bars in Vorarlberg, which were allowed to open yesterday, were “well attended” according to broadcaster ORF. However due to the strict conditions for opening, only a third of restaurants opened, according to the Chamber of Commerce.

Chancellor Kurz to meet with other countries over vaccine strategy

Austria's Chancellor Kurz will meet the PMs of Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and Slovenia fo a working meeting on vaccine distribution in Vienna today. Latvian and Croatian leaders will participate through teleconference, reports Die Presse .
