Austria on Tuesday announced fines for failing to wear masks will more than double in a bid to cut the spread of coronavirus.

From February 8th, failing to wear an appropriate mask in Austria will net you a fine of €90, up from between €25-50.

Austrian Health Minister Rudolf Anschober said checks that the population was complying with the rules would be increased.

Austria recently tightened existing mask rules to make FFP2 masks a requirement of travel on public transport as well as visiting shops and businesses.

Anschober said Austria was trending in the right direction when it came to the virus, but that everyone needed to do more to prevent the spread.
