Statistics Austria recorded 2,431 deaths in the final week of November (16th to 23rd), the highest weekly tally since February of 1978.

The highest comparable week in recent years was at the start of 2017, when 2,340 died amid an Austrian flu wave.

Statistics Austria Director Tobias Thomas said the increase was a “worrying development”, Kronen Zeitung reports

All in all, 77,662 people have died so far in Austria in 2020 - a 6.5 percent increase on the average across the past five years.
