A 51-year old resident of Upper Austria was rescued on Monday from his freezing cold bed in St. Georgen an der Gusen. The police reported that the man had not turned on the radiator and paralysed in a hypothermic state. He was discovered thanks to a friend who had not seen him for four days.
Over the weekend, the entire country was swept by terrible wintry conditions, including gushing wind, piling snow, and subzero temperatures. The region of Upper Austria was one of the worst effected, seeing up to 131km/hr winds and temperatures as low as 18.5 below. It is safe to imagine that it felt much colder than the measured number.
The 72-year old hero was worried about him since he had neither been able to reach him on the phone nor get him to open the door since January 5th. He notified the police, who arrived at the man's residence and broke down the door.
According to their press office, the police found him in bed and unable to stand up without assistance. It was unclear as to whether his condition was due to the extreme cold of his bedroom or an outstanding illness. To be certain, he was brought to the hospital for observation.
