Clear skies are forecast across Austria for New Year’s Eve - providing an excellent backdrop for fireworks and colder temperatures which is good news for ski resorts.

Fresh snowfall is forecast for the beginning of next week, but winter sports enthusiasts have been warned that the danger of avalanches is high. Snowfall in the Alps in the past few days means the skiing conditions are good, but skiers are advised to be cautious and stick to the pistes.

The weekend will be sunny and clear across the country - and the nights will be icy cold. According to weather service UBIMET temperatures in the alpine valleys will be as low as minus 15C. "However, the view of the fireworks could not be better," meteorologist Manfred Spazierer promised.

Colder temperatures in the east of the country have seen the emergency services called out in the last couple of days. The driver of a small transporter van lost control of his vehicle on an icy road in Burgenland. The van flipped over onto its roof and landed in a ditch.

The driver was able to climb out of the car and was not seriously injured, but it took the fire brigade an hour and a half to winch the vehicle out of the ditch.
