Austrian police say a man who was found dead in a car park near Söll in Tyrol was shot.

The body, which has not yet been identified, was found on Monday morning at around 8am by a truck driver.

The deceased was between 25 and 30 years old. His body was found behind a guardrail at the Steinerne Stiege car park. He was wearing winter clothes but had no ID, wallet or documents which could help determine his identity.

Walter Pupp, head of the regional criminal department, said that the man’s body was probably dumped in the parking lot, which is very close to a ravine. “We’re assuming that whoever murdered him intended to throw the corpse into the ravine but wasn’t able to." He added that the trees at the edge of the ravine prevented the corpse from rolling in, where it would probably not have been discovered for some time.

Police believe the man was shot dead near the car park, probably on Sunday night or early on Monday. The murder weapon has not yet been found.

The victim and the murderer could have driven across the Austrian border from Germany, which is only 20 minutes away by car. However, it seems likely that the murderer did know the area and intended to dispose of the body in the ravine.

Anyone who was in the area at the time and noticed anything unusual, or heard gunshots, is requested to call the criminal investigation department on 059133 70 3333
