A 14-year-old Swiss girl has died whilst hiking in Austria's mountainous western state of Vorarlberg.

She was with her family on a hiking trail in the Silbertal valley on Thursday when they stopped near a waterfall, and she leant against the wooden railing which broke and collapsed.

She fell backwards down an 18-metre-high rocky embankment and landed in a stream.

Her father was able to climb down and pull his injured daughter from the stream and call the emergency services. She was unconscious but was resuscitated by a medic and flown to hospital in Feldkirch by helicopter.

She died in hospital as a result of her injuries.
