Four people survived after the small propeller plane they were travelling on in Austria crashed and burst into flames as it hit the ground.

The light aircraft had been carrying two men and two women when it ran into difficulties just after taking off from the small airport in Zell am See on Sunday evening.

Images taken of the craft, which crashed about 300 metres short of the runway near the B311 road, show how the front of the plane has been destroyed by the fire in the engine.

Fire services quickly put out the fire and the passengers and pilot were taken to hospital. One man suffering serious injuries was flown to UKH Salzburg while the others were taken to a nearby hospital.

The B311 road was closed while the fire services put out the flames and took away the plane.

It is not clear what caused the plane - a PA 28 plane registered in the Czech Republic - to run into difficulties or set on fire.

The commander of the local rescue services Bernd Hirschbichler told the Krone that due to where the plane landed, the number of casualties could have been much higher.

“Highway, cycle paths, train line - it is a dangerous place,” he said.
