The incident happened in the Floridsdorf district of Vienna on June 17th when the 24-year-old woman had been stopped by police while walking with her pet chihuahua Emily.

“Three policewomen asked me whether I had a lead with me. I said no and picked up Emily,” the woman told Heute.

“The officers provoked and shoved me. Emily fell down and ran away. I wanted to follow, so they pushed me to the floor!”

According to a police spokesperson, the three officers had then called for back-up over the radio and 12 further police officers arrived on the scene.

Three officers were reportedly injured during the scuffle and the 24-year-old is now facing charges of aggravated assault.

“In the police report there is no eye-witness testimony, only the view of the police. Although there were a few people who saw it,” the woman’s lawyer Martin Brenner told the newspaper.

The dog owner has reportedly been suffering with anxiety since the incident and, with a “heavy heart” has had to put her pet into an animal refuge.
