With temperatures as high as 35 degrees in some areas of Austria this week, it will feel - for a few days at least - like summer has finally arrived.

Although the week started with some cloud and rain, by Wednesday a temporary heatwave will arrive to parts of Austria with temperatures reaching the mid-thirties.

“Thursday and Friday especially will be very hot with 35 or even 36 degrees,” said UBIMET meteorologist Josef Lukas.

Some rain showers are expected in the mountain and hilly regions mid-week although the country will mostly stay dry.

Come Thursday, wide areas of the country will be enjoying the sunshine with only a few clouds expected in eastern Austria.

This continues into Friday and those heading to Donauinsel Festival should pile on the sun cream and sunnies to protect themselves against the 34°C heat.

Saturday follows in a similar fashion, although the risk of thunderstorms increases so perhaps pack an emergency umbrella just in case. By Sunday things start to cool down again.
