The young badger had strayed onto the football pitch in the Döbling area of the city and had run into the back of the net where it ended up getting tangled.
Animal protection officers from the WTV (Wiener Tierschutzverein) said that as the young badger struggled he had only managed to get himself more tangled up.
In the end, firemen had been called to free the animal that was given the name "Ronaldo" after he was cut away and taken to a vet still entangled in the net.
After being tranquilised, the rest of the net was freed at the animal sanctuary’s base south of Vienna in Voesendorf.
They said they planned to keep him on site to check on his condition and once convinced he has not been permanently injured and has no other problems, they will release him back in the area where he was found.
