The two storks were being raised on the roof of a house in the rural community of Niklasdorf in the district of Leoben in the Austrian state of Styria.

But the male ended up critically wounded after a drunken 42-year-old living nearby reportedly used them for target practice with an air rifle.

According to the police, who managed to track down the shooter, he had been drinking heavily at the time.

The attack meant that the one parent that was left alive could not continue to hatch the egg and feed the two already hatched chicks.

As a result firemen were called in to rescue the two baby chicks and take the egg to an incubator. The alarm was raised after the badly injured bird was found and died while being treated.

The baby birds and the egg were taken to the Stork breeding station in nearby Tillmitsch where it was handed over to staff specialised in caring for the young animals.

The incident is a double tragedy as storks tend to pair for life, and there is a strong possibility that the female may now not accept another partner.
