The 36-year-old insisted when he appeared in court this week that he is homosexual, and is only interested in relationships with men.

He said that his experience with the 11-year-old schoolgirl was the first time that he'd had any experience of a sexual relationship with the opposite sex, and had no idea why the idea had come into his head. He told the court: "It just happened".

The court heard that the man, not named for legal reasons, had no previous convictions before he was arrested over the attack on the 11-year-old schoolgirl in the changing rooms of the public swimming pool in the Hütteldorf area of Vienna.

The attack happened in July last year after he met an old friend with her daughter, and they spent the afternoon and the evening together.

According to the girl, he had fondled her breasts when he was visiting and told her not to say anything to her mother, who was a single parent.

The next day they had arranged to go swimming together, where he had put his hands on her breasts and private parts.

When quizzed by the court he claimed that she seemed much older than she really was.

He said: "I thought she looked so big, I thought she must be at least 17 or 18."

A lawyer acting for the victim said that she had to receive psychological counselling because of the sex attack.

As well as being jailed for 15 months, with 10 months suspended, he was also ordered to pay her €2,000 in compensation.

The court also said he must attend a psychotherapy course for people with paedophile tendencies and ordered to avoid any contact with children.
