Violent storms in parts of Austria on Saturday night caused travel disruptions, flooding and several fires lit by lightning strikes, according to fire and rescue teams in Upper and Lower Austria.

Several aggressive storms were experienced throughout the country, leading to hundreds of fire fighters responding for much of the night, into the early hours of Sunday.

The storm front moved in from the Salzkammergut region, near Linz and reaching the Mühlviertel.

Bad Ischl saw some streets entirely underwater, with several basements having to be emptied by fire brigade pumps, according to reports in the Heute newspaper.

Traun near Linz was also heavily affected.

In Lower Austria, more than 450 firefighters were in action, removing fallen trees and extinguishing fires caused by lightning.

More storms are expected on Sunday as the heat intensifies.
