A father in Austria trying to prevent his son from committing suicide ended up being shot and killed after the gun he was wrestling off his son accidentally fired.

The tragic incident involving the 52-year-old father and his 24-year-old son happened on Saturday evening in the family home in Ried in der Riedmark in Upper Austria.

The son had been in his bedroom in his parents' house holding a gun to his chin when his father tried to wrestle the weapon off him when the gun accidentally fired, shooting dead the older man.

Following the incident murder and forensic teams from the Provincial Criminal Office took DNA samples and evidence from around the family house and an autopsy of the body was arranged.

By Sunday, however, police investigating the incident said that there was no evidence of an intentional killing and the son was not arrested. They concluded it was an accidental death.
