The male friend had reportedly run off when she failed to resurface and destroyed the girl's mobile phone.
The tragedy happened alongside the picture postcard Traunsee Lake near the city of Gmunden in Upper Austria last July, where the girl aged 19 and the boy aged 21 had allegedly been drinking together.
Walking along a small wooden pier, the girl, who was only partially identified as Johanna P. because of privacy laws, had apparently decided she wanted to take a swim.
But after jumping into the water, she did not resurface. However, instead of jumping in after her, her 21-year-old male friend reportedly panicked, grabbing her clothes, mobile phone and other valuables and running off.
According to local media, when he got home, he destroyed the girl’s mobile telephone and tried to pretend that nothing had happened.
But he now has been arrested for failing to even call the rescue services, which might have saved the girl's life.
Local prosecutor Christian Hubmer confirmed: "The man is facing charges for failing to provide assistance, damaging property and trying to cover things up."
"He did not even call emergency services, and when he finally owned up, he said he had been drinking heavily, the same as she had. He apparently panicked because it was partly his fault that she had decided to go for a swim and he had not stopped her."
