The trio, aged 16, 21, and 26 years old, and who were not named for legal reasons had been provided accommodation in the German spa town of Bad Reichenhall in Berchtesgadener Land, on the Austrian border.

The rescue operation was made more complicated because of the fact that one of the three, who was still conscious and capable of making a call, spoke neither German nor English.

Police spokesman Ulrich Fagerer said:  "At first, we didn't exactly know what the telephone call was about." He said that the man had managed to communicate "injured asylum seeker", and as a result emergency services rushed to the asylum home first where they found nobody injured.

When they arrived there, they were told by a translator that the three had gone for a walk in the mountains. In the end, they were discovered when the asylum seekers managed to light a fire to draw attention to themselves.

The three from Afghanistan suffered serious injuries in the accident that happened when the 16-year-old fell off the side of the mountain and plunged 200 metres off the side of a cliff.

The 16-year-old suffered serious injuries on his head and legs. Police spokesman Ulrich Fagerer added: "He had broken just about every bone it was possible to break."

His two fellow asylum seekers, aged 21 and 26, wanted to rescue him but were also injured in the process.

Local mountain rescue services said it was an extremely complicated operation to extract the three from the mountain, taking several hours to pull them to safety. They were then taken in a military helicopter to hospital.

Bad Reichenhall became infamous when 15 people, 12 of them children, died in the collapse of the Bad Reichenhall Ice Rink on 2 January 2006. Thirty-four people were injured in the accident.
