Two friends - an 18-year-old Austrian and a 17-year-old Bosnian - had apparently drunk beer before deciding it would be fun to take a taxi for a drive.
As a result, they had called the taxi hotline, and took a sack filled with wood which they told the taxi driver they wanted to put in the boot.
However, when the cooperative taxi driver got out and walked round the vehicle to open the boot, the pair had attacked him and locked him inside, threatening him with a gun.
After closing the boot, the pair stole the taxi and set off on their joyride.
The drunken ‘taxi drivers’ then travelled some 30 kilometres (18.6 miles) from Salzburg down a motorway towards the town of Bischofshofen, where they dumped the reportedly injured taxi driver beside the road and headed back to Salzburg.
Travelling at speed, they had set off a radar trap which had photographed them, confirming their identities when the taxi driver had alerted police.
When they were eventually arrested, the pair were still drunk from the alcohol which they had bought with the money stolen from the taxi driver.
