A storm warning has been issued for parts of Austria this week, with rain and snow also forecast as winter returns.

Lower Austria and Styria will be hit by storm Carolina on Wednesday and Thursday, according to the central institute for meteorology, ZAMG, which warned that conditions could be dangerous.

Winds of up to 85 km/h can be expected in Upper Austria and Salzburg on Tuesday, and up to 80 km/h in Vorarlberg. The west of the country will see increasing cloud cover with some rain and snow. The snow line will drop from around 1,000 metres to around 700 metres by the evening.

On Wednesday, rain and snow can be expected north of the Alps and the snow line will drop to around 400 metres.

Vorarlberg and parts of Tyrol will see heavier snowfall on Thursday. Daytime temperatures will be between -1C and 6C, with the warmest temperatures in the east of the country.

Temperatures will continue to fall as the weekend approaches, with conditions becoming more wintry across the country and snow showers possible in the east.
