The chairman of the right-wing Freedom Party in the Lower Austrian market town of Ladendorf has caused a stir on social media with a posting on Facebook in which he mourned “the good old days… when a popular sweet was still called Negerküsse” (negro kiss).

According to a report in the Heute newspaper, Manfred Gail soon took down the comment about the chocolate-covered marshmallow treats, which are now known by the less offensive names Schokoküsse or Schaumküsse (chocolate or foam kisses).

In another post he said the local Freedom Party had created a new sweet which they were calling "Schaumwaffel mit Migrationshintergrund" (foam waffle with an immigrant background).

Gail told Heute that he couldn’t understand what the fuss was about, saying he had “done it with a wink and it was only meant to be amusing”.

The head of the local conservative People’s Party (ÖVP) Manfred Hager told Heute that he had “given up commenting on the Freedom Party’s faux pas”.
