After the coldest and wettest May in 25 years summer seems to have officially started in Austria, with temperatures of 30C and more forecast across the country for the rest of the week and Thursday's national holiday.

This is good news not only for sun lovers but also for swimmers, with the temperature of lakes and ponds set to rise. Only in mountainous areas are some thunderstorms forecast.

The sunny forecast comes in stark contrast to May, which had around 50 percent more rain than usual and 20 percent less sunshine, according to the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG).

The highest temperatures this week, of around 32C, are forecast for the west of the country and it may start to feel muggy in some areas.

Some heavy showers and thunderstorms are forecast for Salzburg, Tyrol and Vorarlberg on Saturday but Sunday again promises to be sunny across the country and the good forecast continues into next week.
