"The suspect was taken to the prison," Major Markus Tilli, from Klagenfurt police, told the Austria Press Agency. Investigators said that so far it was not clear what the man’s motive had been and that he and the woman did not know each other.

"We are starting to interview witnesses," Tilli said. He added that police were still searching for the gun, as the man had got rid of it somewhere between Schiefling and Klagenfurt.

The young man abducted his 57-year-old victim as she was leaving the parking lot of her office on Wednesday afternoon.

He threatened her and forced her to drive him in a random direction through Klagenfurt, towards rural Schiefling, and then back to the city.

On the way he made her stop and get him cigarettes from a vending machine and €200 from a cash machine. After that he locked her in the trunk of the car and drove the car himself.

She finally managed to escape and call police when he stopped in a carpark. She was in shock, but physically unharmed.

He then led police on a wild chase that ended with him being arrested by special forces police on a gravel road on the Kreuzbergl mountain.
