A satirical song by an Austrian pop band about Russian leader Vladimir Putin has become a surprise hit on YouTube after gathering a fan base in Ukraine.

"This Song Is About A Man, I Rrrreally Like", Viennese band Rammelhof sings, initially in English. "He Is So Cute, He Is So Strong and So Powerful.” Who is this man? “Put-Put-Putin!”

The video for the song is filmed partly in a chicken shed and features comical shots of soldiers, hens, and a peculiar dominatrix.

The song was released and uploaded to YouTube just before Christmas but it only went viral this week, with over 500,000 viewings in two days.

Despite being sung mainly in Viennese dialect it has been a hit in Ukraine, perhaps because of lyrics like: "He keeps his neighbours on a short leash, except the U-U-kraine, and because of them he’s getting out his tanks…”

Rammelhof said they are surprised the song has been such a success and revealed that they have been inundated with comments online from Ukrainians, thanking them.

They said that the song was not just aimed at Putin but was a general critique of people’s desire for a strong leader.

The song was recently named protest song of the year by Austrian music station FM4.
