An Austrian man who killed his wife with a crowbar at their home in Kaprun and then crashed his car into a motorway tunnel portal has survived with injuries.

Police are now investigating the murder, which took place early on Wednesday morning in Pinzgau, Salzburg.

An accident in the Schaufelbergtunnel was reported at 6am on Wednesday. The 59-year-old driver was not trapped in the wreckage and was treated by a medical team. He told police at the scene that he had just killed his wife.

When police went to the man’s house they found the body of his 57-year-old wife in the bedroom. “Initial investigations are assuming that the woman was killed with a crowbar," police spokesman Ortwin Lamprecht said. It’s not yet clear what the motive for the murder was, but police are questioning the suspect.

He was taken to hospital in Zell am See by a Red Cross team and an autopsy is being carried out on his wife’s body to find the exact cause of death.
