Police in Vienna arrested a 63-year-old man at the State Opera on Wednesday after he failed to buy a ticket and lashed out at two officers when they asked for his ID.

The man had taken a seat in one of the central boxes, where tickets sell for over €100. He was there to see the premiere of Josephs Legende, a ballet with music composed by Richard Strauss.

During the show a sharp-eyed attendant realised that the man had not shown him a ticket, and that this was not the first time he had been spotted at the opera enjoying the performance for free.

He waited until the ballet was over and then called the police, who asked the man to show them his ID as he was leaving. He refused and ran off.

When they caught up with him in the entrance he swore at them and hit both policemen, causing slight injuries. He was immediately arrested.
