Austrian officials expressed their condolences and condemned the deadly shooting attack in Paris on Wednesday, according to local media reports.

Austrian President Heinz Fischer expressed his shock over the incident in a letter of condolence to French President Francois Hollande, condemning the attack which killed 12 people, saying the tragedy was completely unjustifiable.

Masked gunmen shot dead 12 people in the capital city of France, before escaping in a getaway car. The attack was considered France's deadliest shooting attack to date.

"We must continue to defend our basic values such as the press and freedom of expression with emphasis," Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz said in a press release on Wednesday.
