Vienna's Schwechat airport has been found to be the fastest in the world for boarding passengers, according to a study from popular travel site Kayak.com released over the weekend.

The study looked at the efficiency of moving passengers from security checks to the boarding gates, and found that Vienna's Schwechat airport managed this in an average time of five minutes, well ahead of second placed Barcelona-El Prat with seven minutes, and Zurich's Terminal D with 11 minutes.

Italy is surprisingly efficient, matching Paris-Orly - each have a 13-minute wait time.

Airports in this class handle typically between 20 and 40 million passengers per year.

Larger airports, such as Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas, with more than 40 million passengers takes an average of 15 minutes to board its passengers.

Among the slowest airports are Russia's Moscow-Domodedovo airport, which takes 20 minutes.

In the first three quarters of this year, Vienna's airport handled 17.22 million passengers, up 2.9 percent over the same period last year.
