A large group of fire fighters battled the fire - which began in the basement of the apartment building in Freistädterstrasse according to police.

Two people were seriously injured in the fire, and seven others suffered minor injuries.  A total of 17 residents were rescued in the operation, as fire fighters brought the blaze under control.

Five of the residents were taken to a nursing home.

A turntable ladder had to be used to rescue some of the residents from the upper floors.

According to police, no cause has yet been determined for the fire, but arson cannot be ruled out at this stage.

The house is presently considered unsafe, and has been sealed by police while the clean up begins and investigations are completed.
