Vienna's public prosecutor is investigating death threats sent to Austria's Interior Minister Johanna Mikl-Leitner (ÖVP).

Mikl-Leitner has received two letters in which she is insulted and threatened with death. The ORF state broadcaster reports that the writer of the letters holds Mikl-Leitner responsible for what he views as Austria’s too liberal asylum policies.

He writes that if Austria takes in any more refugees he will “execute” her and 50 other politicians from the SPÖ, ÖVP and Green Party. One letter was addressed directly to the Interior Ministry and the other to the ORF.

On Tuesday the Interior Ministry declined to comment on the matter. Vienna’s public prosecutor confirmed that an investigation has been launched due to an anonymous death threat against the minister.

In 2013, Austria received close to 17,500 asylum requests, mainly from Syria, Afghanistan and Russia.
