The exquisite and historically significant jewel in the crown of the former Austro-Hungarian empire ranks in eighth place, behind cities such as Washington DC, Milan and Zermatt in Switzerland.

If you book soon, you can arrive just in time for Vienna's stunning Christmas markets, which attract visitors from around the world.

According to Lonely Planet, a visit to Vienna could be life-changing, with a choice of coffee houses, the history of psychoanalysis, and elegant parks and palisades.

Vienna is seen as a city which is constantly re-inventing itself, featuring a brothel that has been turned into a retro-cool cocktail bar, and a sauna that has become into a techno dance club.

For oenophiles, Vienna is paradise, with one local hotel boasting the best wine list in the world.

Shoppers will also enjoy the experience, with the Golden Quarter ranking among the world's best in shopping needs.

Finally, Vienna also offers some unusual places to stay, including stylish studios and the Sans Souci - judged one of the most 'gay friendly' hotels in the world.

Other destinations on the top ten list include Valetta in Malta, Plovdiv in Bulgaria, Salisbury in the UK, Washington DC, Zermatt in Switzerland, Milan, Chennai in India and Toronto in Canada.
