Poll: Vienna SPÖ 'losing support'
Ahead of Vienna city council elections next June a survey for the Heute newspaper suggests that Michael Häupl’s Social Democrat (SPÖ) party - currently governing the city in a coalition with the Greens - could be in for a dramatic defeat with a loss of 9.3 percent.
According to the poll, carried out by Unique Research between September 26th and October 6th, if the vote was held now the SPÖ would get only 35 percent of the vote, compared to the 44.3 percent it got in 2010.
Vienna is considered the centre of the SPÖ in Austria and Häupl has been mayor since 1994, winning three elections since then.
The Heute poll, which questioned 500 people, showed that the anti-immigration FPÖ party would get 27 percent - an increase of 1.5 percent from 2010. The Greens were up around two percent to 15 percent and the ÖVP down two percent to 12 percent.
56 percent of those polled said they were "not satisfied" with the SPÖ/Greens coalition, and one in four were "dissatisfied".
However 44 percent said they wanted to keep Michael Häupl as mayor, 27 percent would vote for Heinz-Christian Strache (FPÖ), and only 15 percent for Maria Vassilakou (Greens).
81 percent said they considered Vienna to be "a great city", 82 percent found public transport to be “excellent” and 59 percent said they felt “very safe” in the city.
74 percent said they found living costs "too expensive" and 52 percent felt there are “too many foreigners”.
Pollster Peter Hajek said that the survey confirmed international studies and showed that overall the Viennese “are very satisfied with their quality of life," but felt that the city “was better in the old days”.
