Vienna’s main shopping street Mariahilfer Strasse will have free Wi-Fi as part of the project to modernise and redesign it.

Users will be able to surf the web for free after registering their mobile phone number, although content such as pornography will be blocked.

The homepage will include local information such as weather, news, the location of the nearest drinking fountain and toilets as well as first aid stations. Wi-Fi should be available on the Mariahilfer Strasse by mid November.

Free Wi-Fi hotspots are already available around the Rathausplatz and the Donauinsel.

Work on the Mariahilfer Strasse is going according to schedule, according to a city council spokesman.

Seating areas and water features have been set up in the pedestrian zone between Andreasgasse and Neubaugasse as well as between Zieglergasse and Schottenfeldgasse, and bike parking facilities will soon be available.

Several other free Wi-Fi initiatives exist already in Vienna, including the Enzis Wi-Fi enabled seating at the MuseumsQuartier, plus the free Wi-Fi proposed for major transport hubs next year.
