The post has something for everybody, according to an Austrian Post slogan, but one pensioner received slightly more than she bargained for when she discovered she'd been sent a package of hashish from Holland.

The 61-year-old from Lower Austria was flabbergasted to open a foil-wrapped package containing two hashish blocks weighing 100 grams and worth around €2,000 euros.

"At first I thought it was handmade chocolate that a friend had sent as a belated birthday gift," the woman told the Krone paper.

"But then I saw that the package was labelled 'Afghani hash' and I took it immediately to the police. Why would anyone want to send me drugs?"

She said that when she returned from holiday she had received a note from the postman saying that he had left a parcel for her with a neighbour. When she collected it she noticed that it had a Dutch postal stamp and no return address.

Police spokesman Johann Baumschlager said police are now investigating whether the parcel was sent to the wrong address or if for some reason the sender had deliberately chosen the pensioner as the recipient.

"We will clarify where the shipment comes from, who the sender is, and who ordered the drugs," he said.
