Get creative at Vienna Design Week
For the next ten days Vienna will become a platform and showcase for design and creativity.
Vienna Design Week puts on a number of events across the city - in collaboration with museums, production companies and designers from around the world.
At the heart of Vienna Design Week are the Passionswege. Selected designers are invited to participate in an experimental collaboration with Viennese shops or traditional businesses.
This year, the designers are working with, amongst others, the jeweller A. E. Köchert, the traditional shoemaker Rudolf Scheer & Söhne, the glassware specialist Lobmeyr, the Vienna Silver Factory, the glassmakers Stiefelmeyer and the upholstery company Stani.
Much of the action will concentrate on the 3rd district, where the festival headquarters are also located. The Baroque Palais Schwarzenberg is the hub of the festival with an information point, pop-up café, laboratory and several exhibitions. It’s worth visiting just to get a look inside this beautiful building, which is usually closed to the public.
The festival will focus this year on design from Hungary.
Last year it welcomed over 30,900 visitors. The aim of the festival, which is in its eighth year, is to show how design shapes people’s everyday lives and their world as consumers, as well as influencing our sense of aesthetics.
Local craftsmen will be running workshops on how to do home improvements and create works of design yourself.
