From 2015, all key junctions of Vienna's public transport system will offer free internet access.

Currently, stations are being checked for eligibility and assessed as to whether such a project can be financed by private investors.

"It's late, but finally there is movement on the issue," wrote Vienna Transport spokesman, Councillor Roman Stiftner of the conservative Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) on Wednesday in a press release, in response to Councillor Renate Brauner's announcement of the free Wi-Fi plan.

"Since in Vienna we are only focused on multimillion-dollar prestige projects in the transport sector, such plans have been completely neglected. The next step, however, should be that not only the stations, but also the individual trains are provided with free Wi-Fi access," wrote Stiftner in his press release.

For years the ÖVP has been pushing for an "adequate supply of public space and public transport with free Wi-Fi."

It is still unclear whether the costs will be covered by the budget of the Wiener Linien, or whether a private investor will be involved.
