Police in the Upper Austrian district of Wels pulled over a speeding Italian on Monday afternoon, only to discover an illegal cargo of eight French bulldog puppies.

The Italian was stopped on the Western Motorway (A1) near Sipbachzell.

An inspection of the vehicle revealed the puppies, which were being transported in laundry baskets.

The driver was also found to be driving without authorization.

The bulldog puppies were temporarily housed in a local veterinary clinic.
