Mother of abandoned newborn found

The mother of a newborn baby left abandoned in the stairwell of a Vienna apartment block has been tracked down by police.
Petra Mandl of the youth welfare office confirmed that they have been in contact with the 23-year-old mother.
For the time being the youth welfare office is caring for the baby girl, whilst it carries out an assessment of the mother’s condition.
The woman confessed to having left the baby in an apartment block in Kaiserstrasse. She said she had given birth by herself in her apartment and felt overwhelmed by her situation.
She said that she had wanted to take her daughter to the hospital after giving birth but hadn’t had enough strength.
She has been released without charge.
