A 41-year-old man from Steyr, Upper Austria, allegedly exploited two gullible animal lovers by pretending to be collecting for an animal welfare organization and fleecing them of more than €100,000.

Police are now investigating the man, and whether all the allegations are true.

He managed to gain the trust of an 89-year-old woman and her 65-year-old son, living in Linz. They claim he persuaded them to make 30 cash withdrawals from their savings accounts and hand over the money to him.

The pair knew nothing about him other than his first name, and that he lived in Steyr.

Police arrested the man after his victims recognized him and he confessed to taking some money from them. He is currently in Linz prison.
