Police said the man had stolen a car from a petrol station in Dornbirn, Vorarlberg.

He had overtaken a police patrol car at excessive speed in Kronburg. They gave chase but the 36-year-old ignored their attempts to stop him. As he sped off he damaged several lights at a construction site and endangered the lives of other road users.

As the chase continued he drove through several police road blocks and damaged a police vehicle. As he neared Vomp and tried to overtake a truck he skidded, and crashed into another car. He and the other driver sustained only slight injuries, but the stolen car was a wreck.

Police said the man had a blood alcohol level of 0.6mg per ml, over the legal limit of 0.5mg.
