Police who stopped a man who ran several red lights in Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus in Vienna took on more than they bargained for when it turned out the man's wife was in labour.

Police stopped the car at 3am on Friday after they noticed it speeding through red lights. A 21-year-old man jumped out and ran towards them saying: “My wife is having our baby!”

It turned out this was no made-up excuse as when they looked in the passenger seat a heavily pregnant young woman was in the last stages of labour, with the baby’s head clearly visible.

As luck would have it the police didn’t have to step in as midwives as they were able to flag down a passing ambulance with a doctor on board.

He helped the woman finish giving birth to a healthy boy. Mother and baby are doing well and are in hospital for observation.
