A 43-year-old worker on a farm in Mooshuben in Steiermark was found dead on Tuesday morning by two neighbours after he went to retrieve a bull which had broken out of its pasture.

Police say that the man was likely killed by a three-year-old bull weighing more than 1,000 kg (2,200 pounds).  He was last seen alive at 8:30 am, when he set off to catch some cows and a bull which had broken through a fence.  He had known the bull since it was a calf.

The body of the man was discovered around 11 a.m.  He had severe facial, head and thoracic injuries.  A district doctor was unable to revive him.

An official of the police department in Mariazell said that the bull had been previously noted for its aggression.  He will be put down, according to the owner of the bull.

This is the second incident involving a fatal encounter with cattle this week, as a German woman was killed by a cow while out walking her dog.
