The Austrian Foreign ministry has begun to investigate allegations that a US spy who worked for German foreign intelligence (BND) has met at least two CIA agents working at the US embassy in Vienna several times since 2012.

This was reported by the German news magazine Der Spiegel.

Besides that the Austrian Foreign Ministry refused any further comment on that story. There was no one available at the US embassy to give a statement to the APA press agency on the weekend.

The scandal has chilled German relations with Washington to levels not seen since Chancellor Angela Merkel's predecessor opposed the US invasion of Iraq in 2003.

It follows allegations that Merkel herself was among thousands of Germans whose mobile phones were bugged by American agents.

It was expected that German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and US Secretary of State John Kerry who were both in Vienna on Sunday taking part in the nuclear negotiations with Iran would talk about the spy issue as well.

Germany plans to identify the two CIA agents and put them on trial in Germany.
