Passengers who want to depart from Vienna Airport to a destination in the United States of America will not be bothered by additional security measures, despite a new alert from the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

"The current warning by the US Department of Homeland Security does not refer to Austria", Karl-Heinz Grundboeck, spokesman of the Ministry of the Interior told the Austrian Press Association (APA) on Thursday.

The security situation at the Vienna Airpot was analyzed and evaluated daily. Vienna's Schwechat Airport is the only one in Austria with non-stop flights to the United States.

The United States had said on Wednesday that it would increase security at overseas airports with non-stop flights to the country and U.S. officials cited concerns that al Qaeda operatives in Syria and Yemen were developing new bombs that could be more easily smuggled onto planes.

The new security measures would be required at airports in Europe, Africa and the Middle East that have direct flights, the U.S. officials told Reuters on condition of anonymity.
