The retirement age in Austria has increased by eight months, in what Social Affairs Minister Rudolf Hundstorfer calls "a tangible sign for a trend reversal."

In the first five months of 2014 the average age for retirement was 58.77 years, whereas it was 58.06 years for the same period in 2013.  Hundstorfer (Social Democrats/SPÖ) told the daily "Der Standard" that this was "a tangible sign for a trend reversal".

In the previous five years the retirement age had only increased by fewer than five months. Furthermore, the number of people taking disability pensions has decreased by 14 per cent in the first five months of 2014. Hundstorfer added, that the government had set the course for a further raising of the pension age and for a further reduction of disabilities.

The barriers which had been established to avoid early retirement, would have a positive effect, he said. A further pension reform as required by the SPÖ's coalition partner the conservative People's Party would not be necessary, Hundstorfer emphasized.
