Austria is now the proud home of the world's largest fruit salad. On Friday afternoon, employees from the food chain Spar made an 8.69 tonne fruit salad on the MuseumsQuartier in central Vienna.

The enormous snack beat the previous world record by a large margin, and is thus assured a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. The record was held by the students of the University of Massachusetts, who cut up 6.9 tonnes of fruit.

Around 150 Austrian employees started cutting fruit into a special swimming pool at eight in the morning under the stern eye of a Guinness record judge from London. They used ten different types of fruit, including apples, pineapples, melons, and strawberries.

When the competition was finished, the Spar employees handed out portions to passers-by, and gave the rest away to charity organisations.  Additionally, a portion of the food was given to police officers and medics working at the Donauinsel festival, as part of their catering.
