The hopeless overcrowding of Austria's primary refugee centre in Traiskirchen, about 20km south of Vienna, is "unacceptable" for both people living in the area and refugees, Lower Austria's governor Erwin Pröll has said.

He said he could not rule out freezing admissions to the centre, if the situation did not improve by the summer.

Around 1,300 asylum seekers currently live in the centre in Traiskirchen. The upper limit for the centre is 480 people.

Pröll told the APA press agency that the upper limit could be raised in crisis situations, but the centre had been overfilled for months now. The situation was not only unacceptable, but also dangerous, he added.

It was unreasonable to leave Lower Austria to handle the burden alone, said Pröll. He called on the other provinces to fulfil their quotas for accepting asylum seekers.

The governor said he hoped to see solidarity from the other seven provinces - Vienna was the only other province fulfilling its quota - and solidarity from the church.
